Reading time: 2 mins
I’m a big fan of magnetic words! I have them on my filing cabinet next to my desk at home. I love the hunt for the word I want, but finding another that takes me in a direction I wasn’t expecting.
When we set limitations while we write, we can spark a creativity we didn’t know we had. It narrows down our options, forcing us to find innovative solutions. Constraints, whether imposed by word count, genre, or theme, encourage experimentation and unconventional thinking. Navigating restrictions pushes us writers to think outside the box, leading to unique narratives that challenge both the author and the reader's expectations.
So today, we will be doing a popular prompt that I’ve seen many workshops use. It’s the word-throwing prompt! The host throws random words at you every minute for you to incorporate into your story and take you in directions you wouldn’t have planned.
If attending a live workshop isn’t something you can do, here’s a version you can do instead.
